CONFERENCE FORMAT
Over 150 invited contributions will be presented orally or in poster form. The
conference
sessions will be in the morning (approx. 8.30 - 12.30) and then in the early
evening
(17.00-19.00), with the afternoon free for informal discussions and relaxation.
Due to
the
number of topics that will bepresented, parallel sessions will be organized. All
participants,
however, will be given the opportunity to hear at least one keynote speaker on each
of the
conference topics. Wednesday, June 15 is a free day. An all-day conference
excursion is
planned and is included in the registration fee.
The conference proceedings will be published by SPIE, The International Society for
Optical
Engineering. The price of the proceedings is included in the registration fee.

USEFUL INFORMATION
___________________________________________________________________________
CONFERENCE SITE
The conference will take place at the Kalimera Kriti Hotel and Village Resort,
located 45
km
east of Heraklio, Crete, next to the village of Sissi. The resort complex is a
4-star
Hotel and
Village Resort complex, consisting of the main building and three villages of
single and
two-story air-conditioned bungalows. Laid out over 200,000 m2 of land, Kalimera
Kriti is
surrounded by green and colorful gardens extending to two private sandy beaches.
There
are several swimming pools on the resort grounds. Tennis courts are available as
well as
various aquatic sports.
TRANSPORTATION
Heraklio, Crete, is served by numerous direct charter flights from various cities
of
Western
Europe, by several daily Olympic Airways (OA) flights from Athens (30 min flight
time),
and
several boats from Piraeus (the portof Athens). Those arriving by plane in Athens
via any
carrier other than Olympic Airways (OA) and plan tocontinue to Heraklio by air,
must claim
their luggage upon arrival in Athens and then transfer to the West Terminal. This
transfer can
be done by taxi (cost about 6 US$) or by regular OA buses. There are several
scheduled OA
flights each day. Please check with your local travel agent for details. Those
wishing to
go to
Heraklio by boat, should proceed to the Piraeus harbor. A taxi or a direct bus
from the
air
terminal to the port of Piraeus can be used. Ferries that sail to Heraklio depart
on
19:00 hour
arriving at Heraklio on 6:00 next morning. Escorted bus transportation between the
Heraklio
airport, Heraklio port and Kalimera Kriti (on June 8 and 9) and return on June 15
will be
provided by the conference.
EXPENSES
The conference registration fee is $460 ($520 if paid after April 15, 1996) and
includes
the
conference proceedings (to be published as a separate volume). The registration
fee must
be paid directly to the conference organization by bank transfer, major credit card
or
check
drawn on a US bank. NO credit card payment for the registration fee can be
accepted in
Crete. For more details, see the conference registration form.
All conference activities and social events will take place at Kalimera Kriti.
Under
special
arrangement, the rate at Kalimera Kriti is $130/night/person for two persons
sharing a
suite,
and $165/night for single occupancy. The price includes full breakfast and dinner
(especially
arranged for the conference participants) as well as the gala dinner. Children
between the
ages of 2 and 12 pay $65/night when sharing a room with their parents. For
participants
arriving before June 9, or staying after June 15, the hotel price is $115/per
night/person
for
two persons sharing a suite, and $150/night for single occupancy. The rate is
lower
because
there are no special dinners/activities included.
The hotel accepts all major credit cards, and all major convertible currencies.
Direct
payment
can also be made through bank transfer. For more details, see the hotel
reservation form.
Those wishing to stay in other hotels or pensions on the island may do so, by
arranging,
however, their own accommodations and transportation to the conference.
Participation at
the gala dinner and all other activities organized through the hotel and included
in the
above
mentioned hotel price must be paid separately at the following prices:
Gala dinner $70.00, Greek night $45.00, Barbeque night $45.00
Please note that the conference starts with a reception and dinner on Sunday
evening June
9.
The gala dinner is on Friday, June 14. We strongly recommend that you participate
in the
full
week-long program of activities and depart on Saturday, June 15.
ACCOMPANYING PERSONS
There will be an accompanying persons program that includes two full-day
excursions,
several activities at Kalimera Kriti, and various walks and visits in the
surrounding
areas.
The fee for this program is $140, and includes transportation to and from the
airport. For
those that do not wish to participate in the whole program but wish to purchase
some of
the
individual activities (including transportation), a break down of the charges is as
follows:
Escorted transportation from-and to the airport (port) $25.00
Excursion to Gortys-Phaestos-Matala $42.00
Excursion "the other side of Crete" * $80.00
*this is a conference excursion included in the conference fee for the conference
participants
